Glen Campbell is inseparable from my life. I was a mialitry brat, and just a little boy, when a family member gave me The Astounding Twelve String Guitar of Glen Campbell for Christmas. When the Gentle On My Mind album came out, it was during the Vietnam era, and my father was overseas. I found great comfort in Glen's voice each night as he sang me to sleep helping me to forget about my worries. Since then, like many others, I've been a life-long fan, and I have to say, it's been like having a big brother. I've watched Glen grow. I've watched him fall. I've watched him pick himself up and move forward with God's Grace carrying him every step of the way. He's not perfect. But he is a great example of being human.It was March of 2010 when my own father was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, so since then I've gone day-to-day wondering how much longer Dad with know me. I, even at 52, have still found comfort in Glen's voice. When the announcement came from Glen that he, too, had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's, I cried and prayed, and I'm still praying. I've learned a lot about God in my lifetime because I was led to Jesus through the music Glen delivered in his Oh Happy Day album when I was a child. Glen, among other things, has been a finely tuned instrument for God, and he will indeed find A Better Place . Like you, Cory, even though I've never had the fortune to meet him in person, would like to hang with Glen a little while longer.
Sean,You must venture to Kentucky for the last wekeend in August for the Whispering Beard Folk Festival in Morning View. Among the groups performing was Tonky Wonk, basically one-woman folk band with songs about how there is crap in corporate food production. But she performed using a variety of ukes and mandolins.In fact there were many an instrument on display for the entire wekeend. Plus camping and lake swimming!! Or, you can do what I do, which is drive to my house each night and crash on a comfy bed, then get up and go back the next day.
